NEW LIFE, NEW MISSION: THE FREITAG AIRBAGS

The principle behind the two latest shoppers from FREITAG is «bag follows form». For the simple reason that discarded airbags are the source material and also give them their shape. The result speaks for itself: lightweight, robust, and colorfully accentuated one-offs and at the same time versatile statement pieces for individualists.

Zurich, Switzerland, April 2024 – It's not just truck tarps that eventually get discarded. And when you’re looking for used materials worthy of a second life, road traffic can prove to be a real treasure trove. The most recent examples of this are the two latest additions to the FREITAG bag family: the small F700 ARROW and the extra-large F708 FIREBIRD. Because both shoppers are made from discarded airbags, which were once installed in cars but fortunately remained unused. Tension belts, which become soft and supple after intensive use on Europe's truck routes, turn into handles. The first lives of the airbags and tension belts may be over. But now they have a new mission ahead of them: as lightweight yet robust bags, they are ready for their role as eye-catching, versatile everyday companions.

More of a one-off than you might think
Airbags have to comply with strictly defined standards. Which is why they all look the same. Right? Wrong. These smart lifesavers come in all kinds of shapes and different pastel colors. Depending on the producer, vehicle type, and where they’re used, airbags may also feature colorful seams and cryptic imprints. Crammed into the steering wheel, the dashboard, and other impossible places, they also get their own characteristic folds and wrinkles. Add a complete range of brightly colored, used tension belts, and there you go: every FREITAG airbag shopper is one-of-a-kind.

A new design approach
The development of the F700 ARROW and F708 FIREBIRD was based on a simple, sophisticated, and slightly adapted design principle: «bag follows form». Effectively, it means the airbags retain their original shape and characteristics, which minimizes waste and preserves the memory of their former purpose. The ex-airbags-now-turned-bags have two identities: Moderately full, they’re narrow and compact. But if they’re given a good shaking or have a bigger load, they unfold their full volume and assume their characteristic, rounded shape. At FREITAG, this is affectionately known as the «airbag effect».
