SURROUNDED BY ONE-OFFS
THE NEW FREITAG STORE IN OSAKA
On March 31, Zurich bag manufacturer FREITAG opens a new store in Japan, its second home.
It's now almost 25 years since two brothers in Zurich, Daniel and Markus Freitag, started cutting out their first bags from truck tarpaulins that had spent their first lives plying the highways of Europe. Little could they know that their bags, whose appeal was initially limited to their friends, would one day be coveted and collected by dyed-in-the wool F-ans in countries as far away as Japan. For FREITAG today, Japan is a core market, an affair of the heart and a second home all in one. So, it was high time to open a dedicated store in Osaka, a city with no shortage of FREITAG bag users and bicycles. After all, bikes are the Zurich company's favorite form of transport.
"We think and act in cycles" is the Swiss bag label's credo. Which means that FREITAG not only rescues old truck tarps from the trash heap but also – as another example – collects the rainwater that falls on the factory roof to wash off the dirt from the used tarpaulins. All with a view to wasting as few resources as possible.
In Osaka, the company will not even be wasting space. The new store is just 65 sq.m in area, and you are literally surrounded by over 1200 unique bags hanging from the high-rise FREITAG shelves. In the middle, you will find countless recycled and individual small items and accessories that form the counters for the cash desk. It means that the density of unique FREITAG bags is higher than anywhere else in the world and that even the craziest FREITAG tarp product collectors will find what they are looking for.
The Osaka FREITAG store is located at the heart of the Minamisenba district and was planned and designed with the help of old and new acquaintances at Torafu Architects. Following the opening party at 6 pm on March 30, it will be open every day.
