FREITAG OPENS NEW STORE IN SYDNEY
On September 13, 2024, Swiss bag manufacturer FREITAG is opening its second store in Australia, located in the lively Surry Hills neighbourhood of Sydney and operated by the long-standing partner Keoma.
Surry Hills, an area renowned for its vibrant streets and eclectic mix of art galleries, boutiques, shops, and cafes, is now home to FREITAG’s new Australian outpost. It’s the second one in collaboration with like-minded partner Keoma, known for their sustainable design retail concept. At 40m2, the store offers over 350 one-off bags and countless accessories made from used truck tarps and, increasingly, circular materials.
The historic two-floor terrace house features original period windows along the side of the building, allowing plenty of natural light into the space. The interior has been thoughtfully conceptualized and designed by FREITAG's in-house team following the design principles for its retail spaces: resource-saving functionality, timeless design, and modular, durable furniture systems. The renovation was carried out by Aspire Building, an award-winning specialist in sustainable building practices, using recycled and upcycled materials and incorporating energy-efficient lighting and insulation, along with updating the building’s water and waste efficiency levels.
On the second floor, KEOMAstay offers a unique lodging experience that emphasises access over ownership. The apartment is equipped with complimentary FREITAG rental bags along with items from Keoma Store to make the stay as comfortable and practical as possible while exploring the vibrant surroundings of Surry Hills. It will be available for rent later this year.
The project’s success is a testament to the dedication of local craftspeople, who planned and executed with great attention to detail. Nick Hughes, the driving force behind Keoma, shares, «Working with the FREITAG design team to create the new space was a rewarding challenge. We aimed to build a place showing FREITAG's and Keoma's shared vision of a sustainable future and a conscious community.»
